Recognising Beaumaris Arts Group Studio’s heritage and cultural significance

A heritage assessment of the Beaumaris Arts Group building has determined that the modernist-era arts building meets the criterion for inclusion in Bayside’s heritage overlay.

Council noted the heritage report’s findings at is August meeting and resolved to apply heritage controls to the Beaumaris Memorial Community Centre as part of the mid-century modern heritage study to be prepared in 2020/21.

The heritage assessment of the Beaumaris Arts Group Studio determined that the building satisfies criterion A, D, G and H for inclusion in the heritage overlay, due to its importance to Bayside’s cultural history; representativeness of a modernist architect-designed community building; strong social significance as a purpose-built arts studio and creative identity of Beaumaris, and association with the Beaumaris Arts Group, which has occupied the building since its construction in 1965.

Council is working with the appointed architect and other specialist advisors to ensure any design meets the needs of the Beaumaris Arts Group and respects the heritage significance of the precinct. As we progress through the design process we will work with identified stakeholders for feedback to ensure the plans respond to the diverse interests within this location.

This report follows Council’s 18 February 2020 resolution, in summary, to not proceed with demolition of the Arts Group Building, undertake a heritage assessment of the building, and proceed with a new design that is sympathetic to any identified heritage characteristics whilst providing a facility that is fit for purpose.
