Record nominations for 2023 Youth Recognition Awards

Born from an exceptional idea in 2022, the Youth Recognition Awards will be held on Thursday 7 September. Join us to celebrate exceptional young people across the Mornington Peninsula, hosted by our very own Mornington Peninsula Youth Services (MPYS).

The call for nominations went out across the Peninsula – to families, schools, sport clubs, and community groups. We received a record number of nominations, with “Unsung Hero” being the most popular category!

Dreamed up by our Youth Advisory Committee, a group of young leaders aged 12-25, the Youth Recognition Awards recognises the many young people who give back to their communities, whether through volunteering, environmental stewardship, leadership, or supporting mental health and wellbeing.

While academic and athletic accomplishments are often celebrated, these awards focus on young people who are dedicated to making their communities better places to live.

Many nominations came from teachers and coaches, keen to see young people get the recognition they deserve for their achievements.

The Youth Advisory Committee will select the top three nominees for each category. Shortlisted nominations are then passed to Council experts, with representatives from Arts and Culture and Youth Services making the final call.

Quotes attributable to Mayor Councillor Steve Holland:

“We had a lot of nominations for young people selflessly helping their community. It’s interesting that “Unsung Hero” was such a popular category. It highlights the essence of these awards – to celebrate young people who don’t always get the recognition they deserve.”
