Indulge in international food, hear inspiring true stories of refugees and people seeking asylum, and be entertained by cultural performances at Melton City Council’s Refugee Week celebration on Wednesday 19 June.
All residents are invited to book a free seat to the event for an afternoon of live music, an author talk, spoken word performance, food, stalls and more at Lakeview Seniors College, Caroline Springs.
This year’s Refugee Week theme is ‘A World of Stories’.
City of Melton Mayor Cr Bob Turner said a fun, colourful and meaningful celebration is planned for the upcoming local event.
“This promises to be a vibrant display of culture, cuisine, and the arts,” Cr Turner said.
“Sharing food and stories is a great way for the wider community to celebrate the valuable contributions refugees in our very own City make to society and to learn more about the issues affecting refugees.”
David Nyuol Vincent, author of ‘The Boy Who Wouldn’t Die’ and one of the lost boys of Sudan, will speak on his inspiring true story as a Sudanese refugee who survived famine, wars and 17 years in refugee camps to build a new life in Australia.
Attendees can also look forward to a performance by Melbourne based Brazilian band, Vento-pipa and much more including a special spoken word piece on being a refugee in Australia.
Council has partnered with Lakeview Seniors College VCAL students and the Melton Interfaith Network to host the Refugee Week event.
