Townsville’s skateboarding community will soon have access to enhanced facilities with renewal works at the Peggy Banfield and Murray skate parks currently underway.
Townsville City Council has engaged specialist contractors, SkateCon, to carry out $230,000 of works at the Bushland Beach and Annandale skate parks.
Council Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said the work would ensure the facilities remained fit-for-purpose for the community for many years to come.
“These two skate parks are among the most popular in Townsville and we want to encourage people to continue to use them,” Cr Rehbein said.
“The contractor will be carrying out some remedial work at the parks, including repairing the skating surfaces, installing new soft fall flooring, repairing rails and cleaning graffiti.
“Anti-graffiti coating will also be applied to the skate parks to ensure Council can clean any unwanted graffiti easily to keep them appealing to the whole community.”
Mayor Jenny Hill said Townsville has a strong skateboarding community, and it is important proper facilities are available for them to use.
“Skateboarding continues to grow in popularity and even made its debut as an Olympic sport at Tokyo 2020 last year,” Cr Hill said.
“As our city continues to grow, we need to ensure we are building more community infrastructure and improving the infrastructure we already have.
“I am certain regular users will appreciate the maintenance work being carried out at the skate parks.”
Both skate parks will be closed while the maintenance renewal work is carried out and will reopen early June.
