Residential building approvals up over 55 per cent in Tasmania

Tasmanian Government

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, monthly residential building approvals are up by 56.2 per cent when compared to the same period last year, with 278 dwellings approved in May.

Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent, said this improvement was due to a combination of factors.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we have been working collaboratively to deliver more ways to stimulate housing delivery,” Minister Vincent said.

“Monthly residential dwelling approvals have been steadily increasing over the last 12 months and these latest figures are really welcome – these are real houses for our fellow Tasmanians.

“We have continued to refine our planning system, work with local government and the construction sector, to see more houses coming out of the ground.

“From new Tasmanian Planning Policies which came into effect yesterday, and updated regional land use strategies not far away, through to updating the Tasmanian Planning Scheme to facilitate housing, we are taking action across the planning system to activate housing across the board.

“But often the first hurdle to clear is the approval itself.

“With this number growing, and significantly outstripping the national average, we want to harness that momentum.”
