Detectives from Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Branch are encouraging people who live in or own businesses in rural areas to be vigilant with security following a series of thefts.
In the past six months, officers have been called to addresses in Bouldercombe and Glenlee where businesses have been specifically targeted for copper wire.
Rural homes in Kabra, Mount Morgan, Yeppoon and Alton Downs have reported thefts of a number of firearms from their addresses. These firearms are somewhere within the community.
Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said police are seeking assistance from the public with not only the initial stealing of these weapons, but where they are now.
“It is apparent offenders are targeting rural homes and businesses for specific property items,” Detective Senior Sergeant Peachey said.
“Copper wire for instance is difficult to trace and highly valuable at second hand recycling outlets.
“We ask people who live or have businesses in these rural areas, to be vigilant with the security of properties and consider a review or upgrade of security measures.”
Rural properties can be targeted due to the times the address may unattended during the day and at night, with less chance for thieves to be disturbed.
