A united seafood sector working towards the common goal of industry growth will be the focus of a new Seafood Advisory Forum.
The Marshall Liberal Government is calling all seafood sectors – including commercial, recreational, charter, aquaculture, Aboriginal traditional, and processing – to have their say on the scope and role of the Seafood Advisory Forum.
Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Tim Whetstone, who announced the new forum at Friday night’s 2019 Seafood Industry Awards, said the forum would see better communication between all stakeholders in the seafood sector.
“The purpose of the Seafood Advisory Forum is to support growth in South Australia’s seafood sectors by establishing an achievable vision and goals to overcome common constraints and leverage our state’s natural advantages,” said Minister Whetstone.
“The forum will focus on opportunities to grow South Australia’s seafood sector through the development of a 10-year plan for growth.
“South Australia’s seafood industries generated 70,000 tonnes of seafood in 2017-18, adding $814.5 million to our state gross product and significant social, cultural and economic value through recreational and Aboriginal traditional fishing.
“Our state has natural competitive advantages for seafood production and tourism – we need to capitalise on this with a clear, achievable focus for growth.
“Representatives in the forum will come from commercial fishing, charter fishing, recreational fishing, Aboriginal traditional fishing, aquaculture, and seafood processing.
“Rather than considering sector-specific or operational management issues, the Seafood Advisory Forum will look at cross industry issues to work towards common goals.
“Following the consultation with industry on the forum’s scope and role, a formal nomination process for membership will begin.”
