Seafood New Zealand is encouraged by the Government’s decision to clarify the respective roles of central and local government in managing fishing and fisheries resources.
Seafood New Zealand Chief Executive Lisa Futschek says Minister Shane Jones’ announcement today provides welcome direction, although the industry will want to see the detail of the proposed changes.
“We support a clear and consistent national framework for managing fisheries under the Fisheries Act, and we hope these changes restore a ‘clean line’ between fisheries management and councils’ responsibilities under planning legislation,” Ms Futschek says.
“New Zealand’s fisheries operate across regional boundaries, so having a single national system provides greater certainty for commercial, recreational and customary fishers and other marine users.
“It should also remove an unnecessary regulatory burden from councils and reduce the potential for duplication, conflicting rules and lengthy planning processes.”
Ms Futschek says Seafood New Zealand looks forward to reviewing the detail as the legislation progresses through Parliament.
“The Fisheries Act already provides the framework for the sustainable management of New Zealand’s fisheries. Greater clarity about which part of government is responsible for what is a positive step for everyone who uses and values our marine environment.”
