Seed libraries growing wild in Stonnington

City of Stonnington library members can now borrow and share seeds, grow food and plants at home and build their gardening knowledge with the exciting launch of our inaugural Seed Libraries.

This innovative program allows library members to borrow seed packets to plant and grow them in their own home gardens, including vegetables and herbs, heirloom, Indigenous and native varieties.

City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Jami Klisaris, is excited about the idea that started off as a small seed and is now flourishing in our neighbourhoods.

“Stonnington’s libraries are trusted spaces for our community where people can read, borrow books, learn, participate and connect, and they now also offer the opportunity to borrow and share seeds, build gardening knowledge and cultivate food and plants at home,” said Cr Klisaris.

Seed libraries have taken off in other local councils and the fast-rising uptake in Stonnington suggests the popular initiative may be here to stay.

“Our Seed Libraries are a great opportunity to try something different that contributes to our local environment and sustainability. This is an amazing community concept and I’m so glad we can offer it to our community,” added Cr Klisaris.

Here’s how it works:

  • Borrow: Borrow up to three packets of seeds at Stonnington Libraries each month
  • Grow: Plant the seeds in your garden
  • Collect: Harvest seeds from your garden
  • Return (optional): Return your collected seeds to the libraries to donate and share with others

Seed Libraries have been installed across Stonnington’s four libraries at Malvern, Malvern East, Prahran Square and South Yarra.
