Small Changes Have Big Impact for Community

Yarra Ranges Shire Council

The Upper Yarra Family Centre has recently had a refresh, including the five public toilets within the centre getting new tiles and paintwork and making all the amenities, from taps to toilets, more accessible.

Construction considered design principles to enhance accessibility and safety such as easy to use taps & sinks, contrasting colours throughout, new flooring surfaces, and lighting improvements.

“The upgrades are an example of the work our teams do to support valued community services through our maintenance, minor works and renewal works programs,” said Communities Director, Jane Price.

“While five refurbished toilets may seem like a small improvement, changes like these can have a big impact for our community members.”

The Upper Yarra Family Centre is a community hub; home to a kindergarten, maternal child health services, Eastern Health, Customer Service, and community rooms that are used for a whole host of activities.

“These services aren’t just practical; the centre is a focal point for residents that allows for building connection, resilience and support networks for local community members,” said Ms Price.

One of the programs that run from the centre, LinC’s Second Bite Fresh Food Program, provides fresh food to between 80—100 people in the Upper Yarra Valley every week.

“Renewal of these facilities supports the dignity of our residents who may be accessing this resource and makes the working conditions of the volunteers who give their time and energy safe and accessible,” said Ms Price.

“Furthermore, improved facility conditions can also enhance other opportunities – including attracting state government funding for community programs being delivered by community organisations that are delivered from the Upper Yarra Family Centre.”

Julie Szabo, General Manager of LinC Yarra Valley says the upgrades have made a real difference, particularly the toilets and the new flooring.

“It’s so much lighter and brighter and we so appreciate it. The clients are happier, we’re happier. We feel so supported, and it’s a beautiful place to work out of.”

Programs like the Fresh Food Program play a vital role in the community.

“It’s not just about food it’s about community, it’s about friendship,” says Ray, LinC’s Fresh Food Driver.

Ellemea facilitates a local young mother’s group and connects families in the Upper Yarra with the program; “There are parents that are full time or part time working that require these food boxes because their mortgages have gone up, too many bills, the higher cost of living. Or there are other families that have been using it for 15yrs, with smaller children, they might be on their own, and it’s helpful to have the extra assistance.”

“Understanding the services that operate out of our buildings, and how they work with local community, helps us to maintain and build what, and where is most needed to have the greatest positive impact for our community,” said Ms Price

The Fresh Food Program delivers from six sites between Warburton & Mooroolbark – including from Council buildings, the Upper Yarra Family Centre & the Mooroolbark Community Centre.
