Snowy 2.0 delay an opportunity for NSW government to step up, says NCC

With Snowy Hydro announcing an additional 12-24 month construction delay, Nature Conservation Council of NSW warns that climate goals will slip unless additional battery storage is commissioned.
“These delays put our climate goals at risk, that are already too slow,” said Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive Jacqui Mumford.
“We’re calling on the NSW Government to accelerate its investment in clean energy storage to fill the gap left by this delay.”
“To meet the Paris climate goals, all coal power stations in NSW should retire by 2030.”
“No-one expected Snowy 2.0 to be part of the replacement for Eraring power station, but we’re worried this delay encourage those who are seeking to make the case for extending coal fire power plants in NSW.”
“Even the NSW Government’s existing target to halve emissions by 2030 would be put at risk by delaying the closure of power stations like Eraring and Vales Point.”
“The existing NSW Government climate plan relies on the switch from coal-fired to clean energy to cut 40 million tonnes of emissions between 2020 and 2030, and we’ll need more solar, wind, storage and transmission developments to get there.”
