Australia’s top female netball team, the Samsung Diamonds, will be looking to defend its six straight Constellation Cup winning streak at this year’s test, with the side set to take on the New Zealand Silver Ferns at RAC Arena on Sunday, October 27.
Perth will host the final showdown of the four-match Constellation Cup, which will be a rematch of this week’s World Cup Final where New Zealand beat Australia by one goal, with two games apiece to be held on each side’s home soil.
The opportunity was secured by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and is anticipated to attract both interstate and international visitors to Western Australia.
As part of this year’s event, young fans will also be able to sharpen their skills with some of the best in the nation at Netball Australia coaching clinics and other opportunities with the Diamonds.
The event will provide an important opportunity to showcase Perth and Western Australia to interstate and international audiences through TV broadcast, with the match also available to view through the Netball Live mobile app.
According to the latest International Visitor Survey results for the Year Ending March 2019, New Zealand ranked fourth highest in terms of visitor numbers, with 71,300 visitors, and was seventh highest in terms of visitor spend, with visitors spending $88 million.
As stated by Tourism; Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:
“It is great news that people will be able to see two of the world’s top four netball teams, the Diamonds and the Silver Ferns, battle it out in the final – and potentially deciding – match of their Constellation Cup campaigns right here in Perth.
“The traditional rivalry between these two elite teams lends itself to creating an electric atmosphere for spectators and I encourage everyone to be part of the action of this exciting event.
“The broadcast of the final Constellation Cup match is also the perfect opportunity to promote Perth and the State to an international audience, with the combined broadcast reach for last year’s Constellation Cup reaching an average of 527,060 viewers in Australia.
“Out-of-state visitors will be able to discover Perth’s transformation including our new bars, cafés and restaurants, as well as our vibrant nightlife offering plenty to see and do, with a visit to our diverse regional areas also highly recommended.
“Hosting events is an important part of the McGowan Government’s strategy to grow visitor
numbers to Western Australia, which boosts the economy and creates jobs.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
“WA Netball has experienced a watershed couple of years, with the West Coast Fever having recently secured an historic $5 million sponsorship deal – a huge step for netball and women’s sport in this State.
“Hosting the Constellation Cup will back in this achievement and provide young players further encouragement to participate and achieve in their sport at all levels.”
