Stark reality of housing issue on our Peninsula

C219_-_housing.jpg

We have more than 2,300 households in need of affordable housing here on our Peninsula.
Not having somewhere to live is an issue affecting so many people. We’ve heard stories about:

  • pensioners sleeping in their cars
  • families having to leave their communities because a lack of affordable rentals
  • businesses operating below capacity because of a lack of workers.

Staggeringly, we have found women and families are being disproportionally affected. Nearly five times the number of women compared to men identify family violence as the primary reason for being homeless on our Peninsula.
We’re working hard to change this for women, families and everyone to have a safe and affordable home.
We’re proposing to offer select parcels of Shire-owned land for the purposes of affordable rental housing.
We currently have an Expression of Interest (EOI) out to attract partner organisations and housing experts to help develop a proposal for affordable housing options in Rosebud, Capel Sound, Hastings and Mornington.
We want to hear from you. You have the opportunity to provide input into this project. Your feedback will be used to inform Council’s decision making and will be presented to interested housing partners.
Our community consultation is open and closes on Monday 14 March 2022.

“With so many people on the Peninsula without a safe and affordable home to live in, we want to hear from our community to find out how we can help.”Quote attributable to Deputy Mayor Councillor Lisa Dixon:
“The lack of affordable housing is a critical problem on the Peninsula; we are the sixth worst Victorian municipality for people rough sleeping. Something needs to be done to enable people in our community to access housing more easily.”Quote attributable to Triple A Housing Committee member and Seawinds Ward Councillor Antonella Celi:
“This Council is pleased to lead the way to create collaborative partnerships with housing providers and welfare agencies who can expertly address the issue of homelessness and housing insecurity on the Peninsula.”
