The State Library of Western Australia has successfully bid for a handwritten letter by then Fremantle resident Bon Scott, lead vocalist and lyricist in hard rock band AC/DC.
The letter was written in August 1978, two years before Scott’s death from acute alcohol poisoning, to his childhood friend Valerie Lary whilst AC/DC were on tour in Pittsburgh, USA.
In the three-page correspondence, Scott writes about the challenges of recording a live album, the gruelling tour schedule, the band’s alcohol consumption and his own money troubles. Scott also expresses his eagerness to enjoy some beachside relaxation in Fremantle after the tour.
The letter is on display in the State Library until April 2019.
The significant acquisition adds to the music recordings, photographs, books, posters, and newspaper and journal articles of Bon Scott and AC/DC in the library’s heritage collection.
As noted by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:
“This unique document is a one-of-a-kind treasure and a rare insight into the life of one of WA’s most celebrated music legends.
“The letter is a dynamite acquisition for the library and will add to its collection of AC/DC materials and artefacts.
“The State Library continues to let there be rock by acquiring, cherishing and sharing the history of Western Australian music.”
