Statewide planning scheme now operational in Burnie

Roger Jaensch,Minister for Planning

The Tasmanian Government’s commitment to delivering a single Statewide planning scheme has reached another milestone with the scheme now operational in the Burnie City Council local government area.

Burnie is the first council to implement the Statewide planning scheme, and I congratulate them for their hard work and professionalism in achieving this.

The Statewide scheme provides a single set of planning rules that will apply consistently right across the State, making it easier for Tasmanians to build a house or apartment, run a business, or operate a farm, no matter which local government area they are in.

With Burnie now up and running, I encourage other councils to follow their example and give priority to completing the task of finalising their own Local Provisions Schedules, so that the Statewide scheme can begin to have effect in their local government area.

The benefits of the Statewide planning scheme will become more and more apparent as it progressively becomes operational in more local government areas, providing increased certainty and consistency for developers, councils and the community.

Delivering the Statewide planning scheme is a key commitment for the Government, with the aim of having it in full effect across Tasmania by the end of 2021.
