The Singapore National Netball team will arrive on the Sunshine Coast today for a seven day training camp at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
The training camp comes on the back of meetings held last year between Deputy Mayor Cr Tim Dwyer and international sporting agencies in Singapore.
Those meetings promoted the Sunshine Coast as a location for high performance sports training following the successful pre-Commonwealth Games training camps held across the region.
Cr Dwyer said council was excited to welcome the Singapore National Netball team as Sunshine Coast’s status as a premium tourism and sports training destination continued to be recognised.
“As the home of Australia’s biggest netball festival, NetFest, and with the success of the Sunshine Coast Lightning – our two-time Suncorp Super Netball champions, Sunshine Coast is perfectly positioned as a destination for high performance netball training and events,” Cr Dwyer said.
“The Singapore National Netball team chose the region because of our growing reputation as a sports destination and the high-quality training facilities at USC.
“Team members will take full advantage of our region’s natural beauty, enjoying some local sightseeing and coastal activities and trying out the new TreeTop Challenge at the Big Pineapple.”
Ranked 25th in the world by the International Netball Federation, the Singapore National Netball team will play against three state-level squads during their visit including USC Thunder teams – Ruby and Sapphire Series – both feeder teams to our national title-winning Sunshine Coast Lightning.
Sunshine Coast Lightning CEO Danielle Smith said the team was pleased to welcome the Singapore National netball team to the Sunshine Coast, to show off USC’s excellent facilities and meet Sunshine Coast’s supportive community.
“I’m sure they will benefit from the training camp and we look forward to working with them in the future,” Ms Smith said.
Cr Dwyer said he hoped this partnership with Singapore would see closer collaboration in tourism, education and food exports, especially when the new Sunshine Coast International Airport expansion came on-line in December 2020.
Two hundred seats will be available for the Singapore versus NT Storm match being played at USC Stadium on Thursday, March 7 at 6pm.
