Support your fellow Territorian, Buy local this Christmas

Buying local means supporting Territory jobs and industry, and there is no better time to buy local seafood than now, with Christmas and the New Year just around the corner.

Findings from new research by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation has found, the Territory’s commercial fishing and aquaculture operators inject $136 million dollars into the NT economy each year, creating 940 local jobs.

For every 100 jobs in the seafood industry, a further 57 are created elsewhere. And every $1 million produced by the seafood industry creates an extra $400,000 through related services, such as fuel, repairs and equipment.

The Territory’s high-quality fresh and tasty seafood products are due to the Territory’s well-managed fisheries, evident with the popularity of the local products.

In April this year the Territory Labor Government and NT Seafood Council combined to promote the ‘Support NT Caught’ message, with many restaurants and cafes using the slogan.

Since coming to office, the Territory Labor Government has strengthened Buy Local conditions to support local job creation.

This includes:

– The creation a Buy Local Industry Advocate;

– Standard NT Government contractual terms and conditions to incorporate the successful tenderer’s local benefit commitments.

– A robust contract management framework to improve NT Government and supplier relationships and contractual compliance.
