A 40kW roof top solar installation bookmarks another successful chapter in the continued roll out of energy efficiency improvements for The Hills Shire.

The new solar system was recently installed on the roof of Vinegar Hill Memorial Library and Community Centre at Rouse Hill Town Centre to harness the sunlight to convert into electricity.

It will generate 100 per cent of the Library and Community Centre’s day-time energy use.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne said she was proud Council was investing in sustainable products that brought returns for both Council and the environment.

“People are feeling more strongly about using sustainable energy and reducing their carbon footprint, and so I’m pleased Council is taking this initiative,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Not only will these solar panels reduce our electricity consumption – it’ll save money on the power bill too, which is a bonus,” Mayor Byrne added.

Council is committed to undertaking energy saving projects, including LED lighting upgrades in Council owned buildings, venues and facilities; installing gas hot water systems; implementing specialised sub-surface drainage on a number of sporting fields; and installing sensors and variable speed drives to carpark exhaust fans and chiller pumps in a number of Council buildings.

Council has a total of 15 operational solar power systems on its buildings, which has generated a total of 250,000 kW of electricity in the last financial year.
