Sustainable industry growth plan for the salmon industry – One Year Review

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Today I have released the One Year Review of the Sustainable Industry Growth Plan for the Salmon Industry.

This provides an update on initiatives we are delivering to support the industry to achieve a $2 billion a year growth target by 2030.

The ‘Salmon Plan’, released in December 2017, is a strategic document outlining how the Government is supporting this important local industry as it continues to grow responsibly to meet market demand for our iconic salmon products.

Key achievements to date under the Salmon Plan include working to achieve zero tolerance on marine debris, improved environmental reporting, improved fish health, improved transparency, advancements in industry biosecurity planning, and increased regulatory compliance and monitoring.

Industry research into oceanic waters to determine suitability for future farming activities is also continuing. These areas are more difficult to farm, but industry is committed to exploring these sites to produce healthy fish with a smaller environmental impact.

Both Government and industry are continuing with a range of activities with a focus on biosecurity and further transparency.

The salmon industry remains an important social and economic contributor to Tasmania, providing thousands of jobs, many of which are in regional areas, and we will continue to support the sustainable growth of this industry.

By having an industry managed in accordance with world’s best practice, Tasmanians can be proud of it and have confidence in it.
