A 62-year-old man has been sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment for brokering the sale of missile parts, as well as coal and other commodities, in contravention of Australian and United Nations sanctions.
The man was arrested following an extensive investigation by the AFP which uncovered evidence the man was acting as an economic agent of North Korea, generating income for the Government through his facilitation of various commodities to and from North Korea.
Operation Byahaut began in early 2017 when the man from Eastwood, NSW, was identified as a person of interest to the AFP. He was arrested by the AFP on 16 December 2017.
The man pled guilty earlier this year to contravening sanctions, contrary to section 27 of the Charter of the United Nations Act 1945 (Cth) and section 16(1) of the Autonomous Sanctions Act 2011 (Cth).
He was sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment.
Detective Acting Inspector Kris Wilson said this was a complex investigation with a unique international span.
“The actions of this man were in contravention of UN sanctions, which means a great deal of effort and organisation was required on his part to facilitate these illegal acts,” he said.
“The sale of these items could have jeopardized countless lives, and all AFP members involved in this investigation should be proud of their efforts.”
