Two of Tasmania’s high-quality defence industry organisations have taken out category wins in the Defence Connect Australian Defence Industry Awards.

Australian Maritime College (AMC) was named Academic Institution of the Year and AMC Search, the commercial arm of AMC, won the first place prize in the Regional SME of the Year category at a gala live streamed ceremony in Sydney.

The Australian Maritime College was recognised as Australia’s prime university or academic institution that best supports the strengthening of Australia’s defence and national security capabilities.

AMC Search was presented the category award in recognition of their success in delivering services to the defence sector in 2020, including being awarded a $1.5 millon contract to provide training on autonomous maritime systems to the Royal Australian Navy.

AMC has been the dedicated national institute for research and training across maritime engineering, marine environment, maritime logistics and seafaring since it was established 40 years ago and AMC Search has been Australia’s leading provider of maritime training, research and consultancy for 36 years.

These wins show the commitment of our maritime industries to move into the highly valuable defence sector and Tasmania’s growing capacity in supplying defence industries locally, nationally and around the globe.

Overall the 2020 awards received some 500 entries from more than 150 defence-related organisations nation-wide.

To win these awards AMC beat out six other finalists in the Academic Institution category, including some of Australia’s most recognised institutions, and AMC Search was selected over nine other finalists in the Regional SME category.

These awards reinforce our claim to being the rightful home of Australia’s best maritime research and training facilities.
