New data out today shows Tasmanians have suffered their biggest real wage cut in years, with wages still lagging well behind the soaring cost of living.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics wages data for the September quarter show an annual increase in wages of 3.6 per cent after wages rose again, on the back of the Fair Work Commission’s annual wage increase.
But wages are still being far outstripped by inflation, meaning real wage growth for the state is actually in negative territory.
Last month’s inflation figures showed Tasmania had the biggest increase in the nation at 8.6 per cent, more than double the annual increase in wages.
And public sector workers in Tasmania are still the worst paid in the country, continuing to fall behind their mainland colleagues amid a cost-of-living crisis that the Premier refuses to address.
While this government continues to obsess about a new stadium for Hobart and fails to get the basics right, Tasmanians continue to go backwards.
