The City of Casey is continuing to work with Major Roads Projects Victoria (MRPV) on the best possible outcome for the Monash Freeway Upgrade at O’Shea Road, Berwick.
Council is aware of concerns raised by local residents, particularly from the Affinity Estate community, over the design of the O’Shea Road section of the Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2 Project.
The connection of O’Shea Road to the Monash Freeway is a critical piece of transport infrastructure that will deliver significant long-term benefits for the City of Casey, south east region and the wider community.
It is part of the $1.37 billion Monash Freeway Stage 2 upgrade, fully funded by the State and Federal Governments.
At a recent Council Meeting on 5 May 2020 City of Casey Chair Administrator Noelene Duff PSM addressed a community petition of 354 signatures, which related to the project’s proposed impact on the local community.
Ms Duff had visited the site and recommended Council advocate in a letter to the State Minister for Transport Infrastructure and Major Roads Jacinta Allen for support to improve the design. Ms Duff called for:
- a noise impact assessment to identify noise impacts associated with the O’Shea Road upgrade,
- a review on the project scope with a view to implement best practice in terms of road mitigation and visual amenity,
- further engagement with affected residents on traffic management planning, and
- sound attenuation treatments to be offered.
Council will advise the outcome of this letter.
In the meantime, the City of Casey is working with MRPV to promote cost-effective solutions addressing local traffic management, safety barriers, shared paths, advanced tree planting, and noise attenuation to be included within the project.
Council will continue to work with all parties, including our residents and wider community, and is committed towards a safe and well-connected community outcome.
