Teen charged as critical incident investigation continues in Alexandria

A teenager has been charged, and another remains in a critical condition, as a critical incident investigation continues following a collision in south Sydney yesterday.

About 7am (Saturday 19 February 2022), officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command sighted two suspected stolen vehicles – a black Mercedes and blue 2019 Sherco trail bike – near Enmore Road and King Street, Newtown.

The trail bike was last seen turning right into Sydney Park Road, Alexandria.

Shortly after, about 7.35am, the same trail bike collided with an unmarked police vehicle at the intersection of Henderson and Mitchell Roads, Alexandria.

The rider, a 16-year-old boy, was ejected from the bike and suffered serious injuries. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Just before 7.45am, police observed the black Mercedes on Henderson Road. A 16-year-old boy was arrested nearby at Progress Road, Eveleigh.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station and charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, and steal motor vehicle.

Police will allege in court that the teenager was involved in the theft of a black Mercedes from a home on Attunger Street, Woollahra, about 5.50am on Saturday (19 February 2022).

The teenager was refused bail and will appear at a children’s court today (Sunday 20 February 2022).

A crime scene was been established in Alexandria and a critical incident team from Sydney City Police Area Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for witnesses to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are investigating any link to the collision nearby.
