Three people have faced court after Australian authorities intercepted and investigated the alleged importation of 24kg of methylamphetamine concealed within steel tubing, in a consignment containing two treadmills, imported from Thailand.
The Australian Border Force (ABF) intercepted the consignment at a Melbourne parcel depot on 4 October 2019.
It will be alleged X-rays of the treadmills showed anomalies and the deconstruction of one of the metal tubes revealed a white crystal substance which returned a positive presumptive test for methylamphetamine.
The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for investigation.
On 31 October 2019, AFP investigators executed a search warrant at a residential address in South Yarra, Melbourne. There a man, woman and 16-year old male were arrested and later charged.
AFP Commander Organised Crime Kirsty Schofield said the outcome was a warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade.
“Australian agencies are working tirelessly to combat organised crime and keep illicit drugs off our streets and out of our homes,” Commander Schofield said.
“If you are a methylamphetamine user and want to stop, know that there is help available – don’t let this drug take control of your life.
“If you are involved in the supply or distribution of these dangerous substances, law enforcement will find you and the penalties are severe.”
ABF Regional Commander for Victoria and Tasmania, Craig Palmer, said no matter how creative drug traffickers were in trying to conceal their illicit cargo ABF officers had the skills and technology to find them.
“Methylamphetamine, or ice, has a devastating effect on the community every single day – and the ABF will continue working with our International, Federal and State law enforcement partners to stop those who try to import this life destroying drug,” Commander Palmer said.
“Those involved in the illicit drug trade should be warned, the ABF has a strong presence at the Border and you will be targeted.”
A 30-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man and a 16-year old male were charged with the following:
- One count – attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely methylamphetamine, under section 307.5 of the Criminal Code Act (Cth) 1995.
The man and woman were scheduled to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court today, and the 16-year old male before the Melbourne Children’s Court.
