Townsville Fire guard Saffron Shiels has been making a mark on the court for the WNBL side this season and is now looking to make a mark off it.
The 18-year-old has come on board as the ambassador for Townsville City Council’s Get Active Sign On, an event with more than 70 exhibitors, aimed at connecting residents with community, sport and recreation organisations to help them be active.
Saffron said events like the Get Active Sign On were a great way to bring these organisations and community together.
“I owe a lot to grassroots basketball because it has laid the foundation for me to pursue a career playing the game I love,” she said.
“It is why I jumped at the chance to be an ambassador for Get Active and to help raise the awareness and profile of the event and get more people involved in doing something active.
“The health benefits are obvious, and these organisations do a lot in connecting the community.
“Our future professional athletes are formed at the grassroots level and with the Olympic Games coming to Australia in 2032, there’s never been a more important time for young people to get involved in local sport and recreation activities.”
North Queensland Toyota Cowboys’ Program Manager Ray Thompson said sport was huge in North Queensland and the Cowboys were proud to get behind an event like Get Active Sign On.
“The Get Active Sign On is a one-stop-shop to talk to local sport, recreation, health and fitness organisations to sign up to active and healthy activities.
“Being involved in something active is a great way to get and stay fit, have fun and to connect with people.
“The event is open to everyone, so I encourage the whole community to get along.”
The Get Active Sign On is on Sunday 11 February 2024 at Townsville Stadium, Murray Lyons Crescent, Annandale.
