UNITAR Launched Virtual Dashboard to Support Andean Community Countries in Data Collection Efforts to Improve Road Safety

Lima, Peru – Reflecting on the relevance of strengthening capacities to collecting and analysing data on road traffic crashes, deaths, and injuries, UNITAR and the General Secretariat of the Andean Community (SGCAN) join forces to strengthen the capacity of road government institutions responsible for collection and analysis of data to advance road safety in the Andean Community (CAN).

UNITAR in close collaboration with the SGCAN has launched today the “Road Safety Virtual Dashboard” that aims to enable road safety professionals in CAN member countries to constantly monitor and track changes in road safety-related indicators. The Dashboard will facilitate tracking the number of crashes, deaths, and injuries in road traffic collisions by country, region, and province. At the same time, the Dashboard will contribute to providing real-time interactive tables, trends, and the most common factors of traffic crashes in the region. This tool will be complemented by training workshops dedicated to supporting the designated country focal points responsible for data management.

Since 2021 and to support Country Members of the CAN including Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru representing 111 million inhabitants, UNITAR and the SGCAN have joined forces through different collaborative agreements aimed at supporting road safety efforts in the region. The Road Safety Virtual Dashboard launched today has been successfully developed with the support of AB InBev and its expertise in data management and measurement of key performance indicators.

Building the technical capacity of relevant ministries of the CAN members for data collection, analysis, and forecasting of road traffic crashes that lead to targeted interventions is a key outcome of the tool presented today, highlighted Mr Nikhil Seth, UN Assistant Secretary General and Executive Director of UNITAR.

The dashboard on road safety is an effective tool that allows countries in the Andean Community to contribute to advance road safety public policy and to identify successful cases that can be replicated in the region”, Mr Diego Caceido, Secretary General, a.i. Andean Community.

This collaboration is in line with the Global Plan of the 2021-2030 UN Decade of Action for Road Safety that calls for strengthening the capacity of road safety professionals working for the government, and other stakeholders from the private sector, civil society, and research institutions on data collection systems for road safety.

A demonstration of the “Road Safety Virtual Dashboard” was presented by Ms. Estrella Merlos from UNITAR who explained that this Dashboard will offer monthly and yearly statistics about deaths and injuries related to road traffic crashes, both from rural and urban areas. This will allow closer monitoring of the statistics by country and by region as a whole.
