Urgent public health action needed

Tasmanian Labor
  • All sides of politics must work together
  • Decisive action needed from the Government
  • Tasmanians are not seeing the level of planning they would expect
  • Labor is demanding greater action to ensure lives are saved and that Tasmania’s health system is not overwhelmed in response to the threat of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Labor Leader, Rebecca White, said all levels of Government must make it their main priority to stop people getting sick and limit the transmission of COVID-19.

“The Labor party is prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Government to keep the impacts of COVID-19 to a minimum – this includes support for greater social distancing efforts and further restrictions of mass gatherings,” Ms White said.

“The devastating impacts of COVID-19 that other states and countries are experiencing demonstrate why urgent action is required to limit the spread of the virus.

“Immediate action may be an inconvenience to people but it will help to save the lives of those we love.

“Tasmania has now seen its sixth case of virus which means that there is no time for complacency – if we fail to act swiftly enough the result could be catastrophic.

“Our hospitals are already at capacity so now is not the time to be complacent. We must act together to ensure our health system is not overwhelmed.

“There must be decisive action from the Government, coupled with clear communication to the public about how we can support one another and avoid illness.

“Consideration should be given to greater screening of passengers at our airports and the Spirits of Tasmania including, at the very least, taking temperatures and recording the details of people who arrive.

“Supplies of protective equipment including masks, gloves and gowns must be procured for our health workforce so they can continue to work.

“This is exactly the time when all sides of politics can be coming together; we have no time to waste – Labor wants to work with the Liberals to keep Tasmania safe.”
