The Western Downs is set to sparkle, with Western Downs Regional Council delivering a project to light up key landmarks to generate community pride and boost liveability.
The regional light up program made possible thanks to the Queensland Government’s Works 4 Queensland program, aims to activate public spaces at night-time and make the region a more vibrant and welcoming place.
Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said Council was installing permanent light installations at three prominent locations on the Warrego Highway.
“Council is committed to ensuring our parks, open spaces, and facilities are alive with activities and connect our communities, which is why we continue to invest in initiatives like a regional light up program,” Cr Maguire said.
“As part of this project, we have installed fabulous lighting along the Warrego Highway between the Big Melon and Chinchilla Visitor Information Centre, including inground colour-changing LED spotlights and fairy lights to create a ‘festival’ atmosphere among the beautiful gum trees.
“We will also be installing a light and image projector to illuminate the Dalby Corporate Building which adjoins the main highway and will also be installing colour-changing neon LEDs along the sides of Charles Drew Bridge, which is expected to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.”
Cr Maguire said the main benefit of the new installations was the ability to change colours and images to promote various charity and community awareness initiatives.
“Just like Brisbane lights up its Victoria Bridge to mark dates of significance such as Anzac Day or breast cancer awareness month, Council will be changing the lights and images throughout the year to raise awareness for various charity and community occasions,” she said.
“This project is about bringing the community together and promoting a sense of pride in our beautiful region, while also making our towns more attractive for visitors.”
This project is being delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government’s Works 4 Queensland program.
