Western Melbourne betrayed as Andrews breaks western rail promise

Melbourne’s growing west will remain on an outdated and inadequate rail network as the Andrews Government breaks yet another infrastructure election promise.

Since 2018, the Andrews Government has promised to build two new electrified rail lines to Melton and Wyndham Vale which would allow faster, more reliable and more frequent train services to two of Victoria’s fastest-growing communities.

Instead of delivering on these much-needed upgrades, the Andrews Government has today confirmed it is walking away from the projects – meaning Melton and Wyndham Vale will remain reliant on infrequent and overcrowded V/Line trains from Geelong and Ballarat.

Shadow Minister for Transport Infrastructure, David Southwick, said communities across Melbourne’s west had been betrayed and were being made to pay the price of the Andrews Government’s incompetence.

“The cancellation of these much-needed rail upgrades is a betrayal of Melbourne’s growing western communities,” Mr Southwick said.

“More than $30 billion in major project cost blowouts have consequences. When taxpayer money is wasted, fewer projects can be delivered and now communities across Melbourne’s west are being made to pay the price.

“Just months ago, Daniel Andrews promised to deliver Airport Rail, Geelong Fast Rail and electrify the network to Melton and Wyndham Vale – and yet he has scrapped them all.”
