WHO announces the development of the Consolidated Guidelines on STI prevention and care (2022-2023)

WHO has made available the membership of the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) Guidelines Development Group for the development of the Consolidated Guidelines on STI prevention and care.

The guidelines are being developed in phases and will provide recommendations for a range of topics, including primary prevention, asymptomatic STI management including screening strategies for populations at increased risk, updated treatment recommendations for specific STIs, partner management, monitoring and evaluation, and service delivery. To ensure comprehensive coverage, previously developed guidelines on specific STI treatments, syphilis screening and treatment for pregnant women, and management of symptomatic STI including syndromic approach (published in July 2021) will be included in the consolidated guidelines.

The Global STIs Programme of the Department of Global HIV, Hepatitis and STIs Programmes is organizing a series of virtual meetings to support the development of these guidelines. The second meeting is planned for 30 May to 1 June 2023. Additional meetings will be scheduled for the second half of 2023, if needed.

The objectives of this second meeting are to:

  1. Review the quality of evidence (GRADE profile) and finalize inputs into the benefits and harms, values and preferences and issues, including cost, use of resources, feasibility, equity, and acceptability on the management of asymptomatic STIs.
  2. Discuss and finalize the evidence to decision tables related to strategies in managing asymptomatic STIs
  3. Provide evidence-based recommendations for management of asymptomatic STIs.
  4. Discuss the scope and PICO for developing DoxyPEP guidelines.
