Wollongong City Council is making a splash this winter, rolling out maintenance works across its network of community pools.
With pools either already closed or quieter, Council crews and specialist contractors will be hard at work delivering essential improvements — from safety upgrades and structural repairs to refreshed amenities.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the annual winter works program is a vital investment in the long-term quality and enjoyment of local aquatic facilities particularly given many are decades old.
“Our pools are some of the region’s most loved community spaces, and winter is the perfect time to carry out these important maintenance works,” she said.
“These works are all about improving safety, extending the life of our facilities, and making sure residents and visitors can enjoy clean and welcoming pools when they reopen for the season.”
“Remedial divers will be used where required to inspect and repair tiling.”
“While works are planned across Berkeley, Corrimal, Dapto, Port Kembla, Thirroul, Unanderra and Continental pools, only Corrimal and the Continental will require additional closures.
“The benefit of doing this over winter is that some of the pools are already closed for the season, and the others have reduced visitor numbers, meaning less disruptions.”
Corrimal Pool is first off the blocks, closing temporarily from 13 to 15 July while works are carried out. It will have pool tile and joint repairs, edge and gutter cleaning and maintenance in the changerooms.
North Wollongong’s Continental Pool will undergo the biggest makeover. It will close from 3 to 28 August for works including painting of the deck and signage, repairs and repainting of the pool shell, and concourse and fencing repairs. There is also work to improve the reliability of its intake pipes scheduled to be carried out.
Berkeley Pool, Helensburgh Pool, Western Suburbs Pool, Port Kembla Pool and Thirroul Pool are currently closed for winter. Works will be completed before they reopen on 26 September 2026.
Visitors can continue to enjoy Dapto Heated Pool while concourse repairs and floodlight upgrades are undertaken, with no impact on using the pool.
Cr Brown said careful planning had gone into sequencing the works program to maximise efficiency and minimise disruption.
“This is a coordinated, city-wide effort that ensures all our aquatic facilities are maintained to a high standard,” she said.
“We appreciate the community’s patience while these works are underway and look forward to welcoming everyone back in time for summer.”
