Young people walk for cancer at Bimberi

Young people at Bimberi Youth Justice Centre will today take part in a Family Walk for Cancer to support and raise funds for the Cancer Council.

The young people will be walking for six hours to commemorate friends and family members who have been affected by cancer. Family members and staff from Bimberi and Murrumbidgee Education Training Centre will also take part.

The young people in Bimberi are very excited to have players from the Brumbies and Canberra Raiders joining them in their walk. This is the second walk for cancer held at Bimberi, with the first in 2018.

Minister for Children, Youth and Families Rachel Stephen-Smith congratulated the young people for their commitment to an important cause and is looking forward to joining them this evening.

“Last year when I joined the young people in a walk for cancer, a number of them told me how, like many in our community, their lives have been touched by cancer.

“Events like this are an example of how the young people in Bimberi are able to engage with the community and become involved in initiatives and activities that contribute positively to their lives and the lives of others,” says Minister Stephen-Smith.

Bimberi Youth Justice Centre Director Megan Valler said the event is a chance for young people to join with family to raise money for charity and participate in physical activity.

“The young people and staff are really enthusiastic about participating and giving back to the community.”
