$8.6 million for marine parks

The Hon Sussan Ley MP
Minister for the Environment

The Morrison Government’s commitment to Australian Marine Parks and healthier oceans takes another step today with the opening of an $8.6 million round of Our Marine Parks Grants.

Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the new round of funding will support a broad range of participants including community groups, tourism operators, the Fishing Industry and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations in developing innovative projects to enhance marine environments across Australia’s 2.8 million square kilometre network of Australian Marine Parks.

“This is about encouraging people to bring forward ideas and get involved,” Minister Ley said.

“Our two previous grant rounds have seen $11 million invested across 34 projects that have helped deliver some outstanding marine conservation outcomes, and I encourage Australians who are passionate about our marine parks and their conservation to bring forward their ideas.”

Previous projects have successfully delivered new fishing technology to reduce bycatch, and supported tourism projects including Busselton Jetty’s ‘world’s largest underwater window’ to enhance public understanding of marine environments.

Funding is now available for individual projects between $30,000 and $500,000, that contribute to the ongoing protection and sustainable use of Australia’s unique marine environments.

Applications are open until 9pm, 16 December 2021.
