Bayside City Council tackles textile waste in creative initiative

Over the past few months, Bayside City Council has partnered with Fast Fashun, to host several workshops aimed at shedding light on textile waste, consumerism and the fast fashion industry, and the associated effects on the environment.

The initiative is specifically designed for individuals aged 14 and above, aiming to engage young people and the wider community in meaningful conversations about sustainability and consumption habits. For younger attendees, the workshops offered a chance to connect with peers who share an interest in fashion, design, and sustainability, while adults were able to reflect on their own consumption habits and explore practical changes at home.

The workshops provide a hands-on, creative outlet for participants, focusing on the art of repurposing discarded textiles, and transforming them into unique, fashionable pieces.

Participants were encouraged to use hand sewing, safety pins, or sewing machines, with artists on hand for assistance. This approach gave participants the opportunity to learn new skills and express their creativity.

There are still a handful of workshops available to attend, before the finale event, the Upcycle Fabulous – Fast Fashun Runway.

Held in the magical Billilla Gardens in Brighton, the Fast Fashun Runway is an opportunity for the community to gather to witness the culmination of the workshops. After months of dedicated work and creativity, our talented participants will showcase their stunning creations in a runway event like no other.

Didn’t participate in a workshop? No problem! You’re invited to come and celebrate the local talent and be inspired by the innovative ways they’ve upcycled materials – you’re also welcome to make your own creation on the day.

Don’t miss this opportunity to support sustainable fashion and enjoy an afternoon of creativity, style, and community spirit.

This fabulous event is free to attend, and bookings are essential.
