The ACT Government and University of Canberra have launched a research project ahead of the national skills summit to better understand the workforce challenges facing our city.
“We all need to come together to work out a way forward to address the complex skills shortages being experienced across the country,” said Minister for Skills Chris Steel.
“Despite all the pressures we have faced throughout the pandemic, the ACT continues to hold a strong economy, including very low unemployment and high population growth.
“However, we are also facing acute workforce and skills shortages both in the private sector and across our public services.
“These challenges are partly being addressed through our record investments in infrastructure and skills – but Government investment and training subsidies is clearly only one part of the story.
“This research project will look at other factors including what other employers are offering workers in terms of pay, security and future job prospects to advance their careers.
“We want to hear from business and industry to help inform possible combined strategies for attracting more skilled workers to the ACT.”
All Canberra businesses can take part in the survey, which is aimed at people with oversight of workforce, recruitment or skills in their organisation.
The survey is voluntary and anonymous with data going directly to University of Canberra researchers.

“Already the survey has had a great response from more than 160 businesses across a range of industry sectors.
“Along with a review of other available data, interviews with peak business and industry groups, and focus groups with workers from interstate, we hope this will provide some good evidence for future actions by government and industry.”
The survey only takes a few minutes to complete and will be open until 11.59pm on Friday 26 August 2022.
