Charges – Cold case historical sexual assault offences

Northern Territory Police arrested a 49-year-old man last Thursday in relation to a historical sexual assault that occurred in Darwin on 29 October 1993.

In 1993, a 22-year-old female left the former Nightclub, Darby’s, and was allegedly sexually assaulted by two unknown males later that night at East Point.

The victim immediately reported the incident to police and two DNA profiles were obtained during the investigation. At the time the DNA profiles did not match to any person and there was insufficient leads to locate the offenders.

30 years later, a DNA profile of a now 52-year-old man was obtained for an arrest that was made on 4 September 2022. Subsequent testing matched one of the two DNA profiles from the 1993 sexual assault investigation.

Further enquiries identified a 49-year-old suspect and a DNA profile was obtained that matched the second profile. As a result, the 49-year-old was arrested last Thursday at his residence.

Both men have been charged with aggravated intent to have carnal knowledge and will appear in Darwin Local Court on 12 July 2023.
