City of Canada Bay celebrates small business

This October the City of Canada Bay is putting forward a plan to bring renewed life to local town centres and celebrating small business.

“As we emerge from an extended lockdown that has paid an unprecedented toll on our local economy, October is set to be a month of renewal and celebration for our small businesses,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“This October we are celebrating the bedrock of our local economy – our hairdressers, artists, cleaners, bakers and baristas, some of whom have been working through restrictions and some of whom have been out of work waiting for restrictions to ease.”

The City of Canada Bay will be featuring small business stories on Council’s Facebook and Instagram this month with Q&As and advice from new, innovative and established local business leaders.

“I was also thrilled this to receive unanimous support from Councillors for a Vibrant Village Centre Recovery Program which will seek to create more attractive, vibrant and lively centres including the possibility of unlocking new shared spaces,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“We need to lead the recovery with a program to invigorate our local economy and kick-start our town centres back to life with renewed vibrancy. I have called on Council to put together a creative and constructive program to bring everyone back together safely in our local centres.

“The program will allow for and encourage the safe use of even more of our public spaces.”

The proposed Vibrant Village Centre Recovery Program will be discussed at the City of Canada Bay’s next Council meeting on 19 October 2021.

Six potential sites have been identified for this program, with community consultation to begin in early October.

At the following locations, six-month shared space activations could be rolled out subject to significant local public support as well as the support from Transport for NSW and the local business community:

  • Altona Street, Abbotsford NSW 2046
  • Coranto Street, Wareemba NSW 2046
  • Claremont Avenue, North Strathfield NSW 2137
  • Edwin Street, Mortlake NSW 2137
  • McDonald Street, Mortlake NSW 2137
  • Hospital Road, Concord West NSW 2138.
