Committing $3.4 Million For United Nations’ Food And Agriculture Work

Dept of Agriculture

We’re helping to improve food security and sustainable agriculture across the Pacific and globally through our voluntary contribution of AUD $3.4 million to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The contribution will help the FAO deliver a range of activities to boost livelihoods and economic opportunities for the Pacific region. It will also further support for the FAO’s critical work on sustainable agricultural practices, including livestock, as well as its plant biosecurity and food standards setting activities which all contribute to Australia’s agriculture performance.

The FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger and aims to achieve food security for all people. With around two-thirds of Australia’s agricultural products being exported, we play a significant role in combatting world hunger.

This week we also hosted FAO Director-General, Dr Qu Dongyu and his team in Australia to showcase some of our nation’s agriculture.

The visit and our voluntary contribution build on our active engagement in the FAO – including by our Agricultural Counsellor in Rome – to represent our domestic agriculture sector abroad.
