Dance tips on pointe

Ever wondered how to do a grand jete?

PROJECTion Dance, who are bringing their performance Closer to The Cube on February 22, have brought us some tips on how to jete.

Zoe Cavedon, who will be performing as soloist dancer in Closer, steps us through how to jete.

  1. Step forward. Shift your weight onto your left leg keeping your knee bent outward, essentially forming a plie, while you shift your right foot along the floor to the front.
  2. Raise your right leg. Point your right toe as you bring your fully extended leg upward.
  3. Jump. Use your left leg to push as forcefully as possible off the floor. Push through your leg, the ball of your foot, and then even your toe to gain as much power as possible.
  4. Extend your legs. While you are in the air, fully stretch your legs out in front and back, attempting to achieve your hard-earned split in mid-air.[10]
  5. Land. Bring your front (in this case, right) foot downward and land with your knee bent to absorb the shock. Keep your back leg and arms extended outward as they were in the jump.
  6. Finish. Bring your arms down as you pull your back leg down and through to point out in front as it did in the beginning.

Sounds simple enough but Zoe has been training for a number of years to get this technique correct.

Zoe will be one of five incredible dancers performing Tim Podesta’s physically demanding style of contemporary ballet.

Accompained by a hauntingly beautiful neo-classical score, Closer is a highly charged, thrilling dance work brilliantly hovering between classical ballet and contemporary dance.
