Derwent ferries plan still going nowhere

Tasmanian Labor
  • Liberals have no plan and no vision for Derwent ferries
  • Ferguson can’t be trusted to manage transport projects
  • Tasmanians are fed up and deserve better
  • A prominent Liberal member and former candidate has attacked Michael Ferguson and the State Government for failing to act on a half-baked plan for a ferry service on the River Derwent.

Brendan Blomeley said that Hobart could have a River Derwent ferry service operating as soon as tomorrow.

Labor Member for Franklin, David O’Byrne, said the River Derwent ferries plan is yet another embarrassing example of Michael Ferguson’s appalling track record on delivering infrastructure projects.

“We know there is overwhelming support for a ferry service on the River Derwent and the Liberals promised to deliver it – yet they are so focused on fighting amongst themselves and cutting frontline services that they have failed to progress the ferries,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“Add to that the unfortunate reality that Michael Ferguson continues to delay many projects to cover the Liberals budget black hole and it looks very unlikely that a ferry service is ever going be servicing Tasmanians under the Liberals watch.

“It’s clear that the Liberals have no plan and no vision to improve public transport despite it being critical for state growth, job creation and provision of services.

“The former Infrastructure Minister promised the ferries would be operating in this term of Government yet the Liberals have failed to assure Tasmanians that the project is on track.

“When a prominent Liberal member and former candidate starts attacking the Government for failing to act on half-baked election promises, it’s a pretty clear indication of how utterly fed up the rest of Tasmania is.”
