Disaster assistance extended following severe flooding in NSW

Department of Home Affairs

Disaster assistance is now available in the NSW Local Government Area (LGA) of Willoughby following severe storms and flooding from 22 February 2022.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Senator the Hon Murray Watt said the scale of this flooding event continues to impact residents across the north and south-eastern areas of NSW.

“Recovery will take time, and local councils continue the immense task of cleaning up,” Minister Watt said.

“We will continue to assist everyone affected by this disaster, however long it takes.”

New South Wales Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience Steph Cooke said that the focus now is on assessing and rebuilding communities and providing immediate support to all who are affected by the floods.

“Extending the disaster assistance to additional LGAs ensures that the affected communities can move swiftly into the recovery phase as soon as possible,” Minister Cooke said.

DRFA assistance is now available in 62 LGAs in NSW.

Assistance available under the DRFA may include:

  • Help for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged (eligibility criteria apply)
  • Support for affected local councils to help with the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged essential public assets
  • Financial assistance for small businesses, primary producers and non-profit organisations
  • Freight subsidies for primary producers.
