Driver dies when car catches fire after crash – Douglas Park

A man has died after a hatchback and a utility collided in Sydney’s south-west overnight.

Emergency services were called to Menangle Road, Douglas Park, just before 9pm (Saturday 5 August 2023), after a northbound Subaru Impreza and a southbound Isuzu D-Max – which was towing a horse float – collided.

Police have been told a passing motorist attempted to assist the driver trapped in the hatchback; however, the vehicle caught fire and the driver died at the scene. The man is yet to be formally identified.

Two men in the ute – the 37-year-old driver and his 57-year-old passenger – were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition. The men – both believed to be from Forbes – have now been released from hospital.

The horse was not injured and is being cared for locally.

Officers attached to Camden Police Area Command and Macarthur Traffic and Highway Patrol established a crime scene with Menangle Road closed between 9pm and 4am while the scene was examined, and the wreckage removed.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to confirm identity of the deceased driver and establish cause of death.

Inquiries are now underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and police are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam vision to contact Camden Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
