Northern Territory Police have charged a 33-year-old man after he drove through a red light and returned a BrAC reading almost three times over the legal limit in Alice Springs this morning.
Around 8:15am officers observed the man drive through a red light at the intersection of Undoolya Road and Leichhardt Terrace heading west bound towards a school zone on Wills Terrace.
The man returned a Breath Analysis reading of 0.124BrAC, almost three times over the legal blood alcohol content limit and found the drivers had a suspended drivers licence.
The man was charged and will appear before the Alice Springs Local Court at a later date.
Sergeant Conan Robertson of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit said had officers not stopped the driver he would have put vulnerable road users at risk.
“He was caught as he approached a school zone at drop off time, which further exacerbates the danger of his drink driving and his decision to put other road users at risk,” said Sgt Robertson
“Running a red light is dangerous, but doing it drunk really shows the recklessness of some of our road users and this is simply unacceptable. Enough is enough.”
In a separate incident today, a 38-year-old motorbike rider who was uninsured, unregistered, unlicenced and driving under the influence of a prohibited substance was caught heading westbound on Gregory Terrace. He was issued a notice to appear in Alice Springs Local Court at a later date.
“In the past couple of weeks we have encountered too many stories like this across the Northern Territory,” said Sgt Robertson
“We need to work as a community to positively influence the decision making of people we know so that we can stop this behaviour and save lives.”
