Ecotourism leaders wanted for iconic Wangetti Trail

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones today called for ecotourism operators to register their interest to develop eco-accommodation on the Wangetti Trail.

Ms Jones said the iconic 94-kilometre trail along the Great Barrier Reef coast from Palm Cove to Port Douglas would become a must-do tourism experience in Far North Queensland.

“We committed $36 million in the State Budget to build the trail,” she said.

“Now we are looking for proponents interested in operating the trail’s eco-accommodation and conducting guided tours with the traditional owners.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said construction was already underway on the first section of the Wangetti Trail from Port Douglas to Mowbray North, with the trail expected to be completed by 2022.

“We want to ensure that treasured natural and cultural assets on and around the Wangetti trail are protected, conserved and presented for the enjoyment of current and future generations,” Ms Lui said.

“We want authentic ecotourism adventure experiences with quality accommodation and amenity for visitors.”

Ms Lui said the trail would increase the popularity of multi-day walking and mountain biking attractions and create new reasons to visit Queensland’s Tropical North.

“This project will create up to 150 jobs and pump more than $300 million into the local economy in years to come,” she said.

The Minister said parties wishing to register their interest should visit:
