The work of some of the most promising artists west of Melbourne is on display at the Woods Street Youth Art Prize exhibition.

The biennial event showcases works by artists aged 14-25 who live, work, study or have a connection to the cities of Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley, Geelong or Melbourne.

The works will be on display at Woods Street Arts Space in Laverton until Saturday 19 November, with the awards ceremony on Friday 18 November at 6pm.

This year, 43 artists were shortlisted from 86 entries. Half were aged 14-16 and half aged 17-25. They contributed art in a wide range of mediums, including photography, painting, collage, animation and more.

People can vote for the People’s Choice award when visiting Woods Street Arts Space or online at surveylegend.com/s/4hpx . Voting closes at 5pm on Saturday 19 November and the winner, who will receive $400, will be announced on 25 November.

“This exhibition is a great celebration of the special place the Woods Street Arts Space holds in our community, and of the creativity and spirit of the young artists who live, work and study in Melbourne’s western region,” Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Tony Briffa said.

“The art prize is a fantastic way for young people to showcase their creative talents and to build their confidence to exhibit their work. It’s also a great chance for them to build their professional and creative networks.

“The Woods Street Arts Space has been a wonderful free community place for 12 years where people can come together to host exhibitions or deliver creative workshops and events for all ages and abilities. It is a great community asset.”
