A major event on the annual education calendar has had a radical make-over this year, with La Trobe University offering its Regional Open Day entirely online.
Organisers are promising an inspiring taste of university life – all from the comfort of home.
La Trobe’s Regional Open Day – covering study at its Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton and Mildura campuses – will run on a virtual platform on the University’s website from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 23 August.
Thousands of Year 12s and those returning to study are expected to register and enjoy campus tours, presentations from academics and students, and live Q&A sessions.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Regional) Dr Guin Threlkeld said although families wouldn’t be able to set foot on campus this year, Open Day promised to be just as fun and informative.
“Our staff have worked hard to put together engaging virtual experiences and information that really captures the essence of each course, and the exciting careers that await our future graduates,” Dr Threlkeld said.
“Participants will hear from the academics who be teaching the subjects, and get a feel for the campus facilities, teaching spaces, student accommodation and campus grounds.”
Dr Threlkeld said while she and her colleagues would miss the buzz and excitement of thousands of families visiting the regional campuses, this year’s format had many benefits.
“If you’ve ever filled your car with students and travelled hours to attend an Open Day – or simply been unable to, due to sheer distance – this is your year,” Dr Threlkeld said.
“It’s easy, it’s cost-effective and it’s far more environmentally-friendly for both participants and the University – a win for everyone during an extremely tough year.”
People considering study next year should register for La Trobe’s Regional Open Day, giving them a tailored experience to match their interests.
Participants can take a student-led tour of simulation laboratories and lecture theatres, student accommodation, libraries, and innovative spaces like the state-of-the-art Engineering and Technology Building in Bendigo.
Potential students can also find out about the Regional Benefits Program, offering up to $20,000 to high-achieving regional students, and Destination Australia scholarships, which are awarded to students living in or moving to a regional areas to complete their studies.
