Four days and counting as Jaensch deliberately keeps Tasmania in dark on housing

Tasmanian Labor
  • Important statistics now four days overdue as Housing Minister seeks to hide
  • More deception and games from Hodgman Government on critical issues
  • Minister Jaensch needs to – today – explain current housing situation
  • Four days after crucial information about the extent of the housing crisis in Tasmania was due to be released, Premier Hodgman and his Housing Minister are, true to form, keeping it under wraps.

Shadow Housing Minister Alison Standen said the government’s Human Services dashboard – which makes public important information about housing waiting lists and wait times – was now again out of date, despite Premier Hodgman’s commitment to release data promptly each quarter.

“Minister Roger Jaensch needs to either release this information today or explain why he is keeping it hidden from Tasmanians,” Ms Standen said.

“This government and this Minister have time and again withheld and delayed the release of these statistics because they are more interested in saving face than providing housing and preventing homelessness.

“If Minister Jaensch is deliberately keeping this data hidden, Premier Hodgman should stand up to him and order him to release it.

“Tasmanians should not forget that five years ago when the Liberals assumed government they inherited a housing waiting list which was at a record low of 20 weeks.

“Today the contrast could not be clearer or more disgraceful. In January this year – the last time Mr Jaensch pushed the release button – there were 3,249 Tasmanian families languishing on the waiting list for public housing with an average waiting time that is now longer than a year at 56 weeks.”
