Fraser Primary Schools new outdoor learning spaces are ready to be enjoyed by the students after being fast tracked as part of the ACT Government’s economic stimulus package in response to COVID-19.
This $120,000 project employed 16 people during construction and has provided Fraser Primary with:
- a new sandstone sandpit for the younger students
- two ‘digging beds’ for students
- a platform that can be used for sitting outside, allowing for a variety of activities including outdoor environment lessons, storytelling or as a lunch space
- a meeting place, or yarning circle, where a group can sit and talk or do outdoor lessons
- new garden beds with native plants for students to interact with
While students were learning from home, the ACT Government took the opportunity to upgrade public schools as part of a $25 million program to support local businesses and keep Canberrans employed. More than 80 of these ‘fast-track ready’ projects, worth a total of $5.15 million, were identified across ACT public schools.
Projects across public schools focus on sustainability measures, creating modern learning spaces, and smaller works that will assist with school operations.
Some other notable projects included:
- upgrades to the Duffy Primary School oval including an irrigation system and new turf
- a multi-sport and multipurpose play surface with cross and circuit fitness at the Woden School
- upgrades to classrooms at Florey Primary School
- upgrades of the garden area adjacent to the Basketball Court at Charnwood Dunlop Primary School
- a new fence for the preschool area at Gordon Primary School
- swipe cards at Black Mountain School to improve safety for students and staff
- a new coat of external paint at Gold Creek School
The ACT Government is committed to ensuring that every public school has the infrastructure to support quality education.
These economic stimulus investments have been in addition to the ACT Government’s investment of $115 million to upgrade public schools across the Territory.
