Universities Australia welcomes the allocation of additional Commonwealth supported places to support universities to educate more doctors in regional and rural Australia.
“Doctor shortages across Australia mean many Australians don’t have access to the care they need and deserve, particularly in regional areas,” Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.
“The Albanese Government’s $90 million investment in rural medical training is a welcome boost to addressing shortages in some parts of the country.
“Universities are responsible for educating the doctors who provide care in our communities, and they are needed everywhere – from the Top End down and from the east coast to the west.
“Universities in all jurisdictions need the full support of government to deliver the skilled health workforce all Australians need, regardless of where they live.
“We would welcome any opportunity to discuss the university sector’s role in helping deliver the goals of the national medical workforce strategy, including additional places and expanding access to clinical placements in primary care.”
